Best Christmas Fruit Cookies


1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1-3/4 cups all-purpose fl our
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 cup dates, chopped
3/4 cup red and green candied cherries, chopped
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream butter and sugar; beat in egg. Sift
fl our, baking soda and salt. Combine creamed mixture, fl our mixture and
buttermilk; mix well. Stir in dates, cherries and nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls on parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12
to 15 minutes or until light brown. Cool on wire cooling racks. Optional,
drizzle with Browned Butter Icing. Makes about 4 dozen.
Browned Butter Icing
3 tablespoons butter
1-3/4 cups powdered sugar
3 to 4 tablespoons milk
Brown butter in saucepan. Stir in powdered sugar and milk. Icing will
thicken as it cools.
