Nothing beats the bold, smoky flavor of homemade BBQ sauce. Making your own sauce not only saves money but also allows you to customize the taste exactly to your liking. This restaurant-style BBQ sauce is rich, tangy, slightly sweet, and versatile—it’s perfect for slathering on ribs, chicken, burgers, or even roasted vegetables.

With a few pantry staples and a couple of optional ingredients to enhance depth, you can make a sauce that tastes like it came straight from a barbecue joint.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, mix together ketchup, mustard, vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and cayenne. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  2. Cook the sauce: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.
  3. Simmer and thicken: Let the sauce cook for 10–15 minutes until slightly thickened and glossy, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Cool and store: Remove from heat and let the sauce cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean jar or bottle, seal tightly, and refrigerate. The flavor improves after a few hours or overnight.
  5. Serve: Use as a marinade, dip, or brush over your favorite grilled meats for a true restaurant-style barbecue experience.
