Fish is not only a delicious and versatile food but also one of the healthiest protein sources available. It is rich in high-quality proteins, essential vitamins, and minerals while being low in fat, making it an excellent choice for people of all ages, from children to adults, both healthy and those with dietary restrictions.

The nutritional value of fish varies depending on the type and age of the fish, which affects the fat content. Fish with a higher protein content and lower fat percentage are considered more nutritious. For example, hake contains only 0.5% fat, while eel can have up to 21% fat. Compared to other meats, fish is considered a “lighter” option, with a caloric value similar to beef.

Fish is an excellent source of protein, typically ranging from 15% in trout to 25% in tuna. Dried fish is even richer in protein, with dried cod containing up to 80%, placing it among the top protein-rich foods. Additionally, fish proteins have exceptional biological value due to their amino acid composition and high absorption rate, contributing to cell regeneration and overall health.

One of the greatest advantages of fish is its favorable ratio of protein to fat. Unlike red meats, fish provides essential nutrients with significantly less fat, making it an ideal food for various dietary needs. Moreover, fish naturally contains very low sodium levels, which is beneficial for heart health.

Fish is also packed with essential minerals, including phosphorus, calcium, iodine (especially in saltwater fish), fluorine, and magnesium. These minerals play a crucial role in bone health, brain function, and overall bodily functions. In particular, the phosphorus-calcium balance and the presence of essential amino acids support growth, intellectual performance, and overall vitality.

In terms of vitamins, fish is an excellent source of vitamins A, D, and E, as well as B-complex vitamins, which are essential for metabolic regulation. Although fish contains little to no vitamin C, it is often paired with lemon, which enhances its flavor and provides a natural source of vitamin C.

Lastly, studies have shown that populations that consume fish regularly have lower rates of cardiovascular diseases and arteriosclerosis. Additionally, research suggests that fish-rich diets contribute to better cognitive function and intelligence test performance compared to diets with little to no fish intake.
