There’s something special about turning simple orange peels into a sweet treat. Instead of throwing them away, you can transform them into chewy, fragrant strips coated in sugar. These candied orange peels are not only delicious as a snack but also make a beautiful homemade gift. They add a burst of citrus flavor to desserts, cookies, or even cocktails.
Ingredients
Peels from 2.2 lbs untreated oranges
4 cups sugar
2 cups water
Extra sugar for rolling
Method 1
Wash the oranges well, peel them, and cut the skins into thin strips. Trim away most of the white pith.
Place the peels in a pot with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes. Drain.
Repeat this process 4–5 times, each time with fresh water, to remove bitterness.
In a saucepan, make a syrup with 4 cups sugar and 2 cups water. Add the peels and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Once the peels are soft and glossy, remove them, cut into even strips or cubes, and roll in sugar.
Let them dry on parchment paper before storing in airtight jars.
Method 2
Place the orange peels in cold water and let soak for 24 hours, changing the water often.
Drain and pat dry. Weigh the peels and add the same weight of sugar.
Cook the peels and sugar together over very low heat until the sugar melts and coats the peels evenly, about 2 hours. Stir often to prevent sticking.
Spread the peels out to cool slightly, then roll in sugar.
Store in jars with tight-fitting lids.
These candied orange peels are wonderful on their own, but they also brighten up baked goods or can be served alongside a cup of coffee or tea.
