WHO IS SAINT VALENTINE OF TERNI?

Valentine was a bishop of Terni, formerly Interamna, as the city was called in Roman times in the 4th century. Valentine was executed by beheading along the Roman Via Flaminia. Later, he was revered for spreading Christianity among young people and noble Roman families.

The city of Terni in Umbria celebrates Saint Valentine as its patron saint. Every year on February 14, the city hosts special events, exhibitions, and celebrations dedicated to love, attracting couples from many other countries.

WHY IS HE ASSOCIATED WITH VALENTINE’S DAY?

According to traditional Christian belief, Saint Valentine was the protector of couples in love, and later he became a symbol of love, marriage, and romantic devotion.

According to numerous legends, Valentine secretly married couples even when it was forbidden by Roman authorities. One of the most famous legends tells the story of two young lovers, Sabinus and Serapia, whose relationship was opposed by their parents because they belonged to different religions — Christianity and paganism.

Seeking help, they turned to Bishop Valentine, who married them. When Serapia later fell ill with tuberculosis, Sabinus asked Saint Valentine to come to her deathbed. Praying to God for mercy, Valentine granted their wish, and according to legend, the two lovers passed away together, forever united in eternity.

HOW IS SAINT VALENTINE CELEBRATED TODAY?

Throughout the entire month of February, the city of Terni hosts events dedicated to Saint Valentine.

During this time, Terni becomes a romantic and welcoming city. Merchants, restaurants, cinemas, and theaters join the celebration, offering rich programs of performances, cultural gatherings, and artistic tours.

A special place among these events is held by the Saint Valentine Award, a symbolic gesture of love granted to individuals and organizations distinguished in the fields of culture, science, sports, and humanitarian work. This award is accompanied by a literary competition for poetry and prose.
