Classic potato moussaka made with layers of tender sliced potatoes, seasoned ground meat, and a creamy egg and milk custard. This comforting, oven-baked dish is perfect for a family-style meal or weekend gathering.
Ingredients:
- 10.5 oz ground meat
- 4 medium potatoes
- 1 small yellow onion
- 1 3/4 cups milk
- 2 eggs
- Pepper, seasoning salt, paprika
- Oil for sautéing
Preparation
In a pan with oil, sauté a small chopped onion, then add the ground meat. Stir constantly to keep the meat from clumping. Once it turns a light brown-gray color, season with a teaspoon of seasoning salt, a little pepper, and half a teaspoon of paprika. Stir and remove from heat.
In a round baking dish about 10 inches in diameter, arrange a layer of potato slices cut 1/8 inch thick. Fill in any gaps with diced potatoes. Pour the cooked meat mixture over the potatoes, then cover with another layer of potato slices.
In the same pan used for the meat, whisk together 2 eggs and 1 3/4 cups of milk. Pour this mixture evenly over the potatoes and meat.
Bake at 400°F (200°C) about 45–50 minutes.
