Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside,homemade cheese sticks are perfect for parties, picnics, or a cozy afternoon snack. You can sprinkle them with sesame seeds, caraway, or shredded cheese for extra flavor and crunch.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) margarine
- 1 tablespoon lard
- 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large egg
- 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- About 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or as much as needed to form a smooth dough)
For topping:
- 1 egg yolk + a few drops of milk (for brushing)
- Optional: sesame seeds, caraway seeds, or shredded cheese
Preparation:
- In a large bowl, cream together the margarine, lard, and vegetable oil until smooth and fluffy.
- Add the egg, milk, and salt, then gradually mix in the flour until a soft but workable dough forms.
- Knead well until smooth, then cover and let rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/3 inch thickness. Cut into sticks or use a cookie cutter for fun shapes.
- Place the sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush with beaten egg yolk mixed with a few drops of milk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, caraway, or shredded cheese if desired.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown.
