A creamy, caramelized delight, Dulce de Leche is a staple in many South American kitchens. This velvety spread is perfect for adding a rich, sweet touch to everything from desserts to your morning toast. Simple yet indulgent, it’s the kind of treat that transforms everyday snacks into something special.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. In a deep, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and baking soda. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, and simmer, stirring frequently to prevent burning. This process can take about 1 to 1 ½ hours, during which the mixture will thicken and turn a rich golden brown.
  3. Once it reaches a thick, spreadable consistency, remove from heat.
  4. Carefully transfer the dulce de leche into a clean jar. Allow it to cool at room temperature before sealing and refrigerating. The dulce de leche will thicken further as it cools.
