Who doesn’t love moussaka? It’s a classic dish enjoyed by many, and every recipe has its own special touch.
Ingredients (Recipe 1):
- About 9 large potatoes
- 1 onion
- 1 to 1.5 pounds ground meat (mixed beef and pork recommended)
- 1 2/3 cups sour cream or milk
- 2 eggs
- Seasoning (salt or your choice)
Instructions:
- Boil the potatoes. You can boil them with skins on or peeled — peeled is easier but boiling in skins helps retain flavor.
- While potatoes cook, sauté chopped onion, then add ground meat and cook through. Add salt, seasoning, or other spices you like.
- In a baking dish, layer sliced potatoes, then meat mixture, alternating until all is used (potatoes, meat, potatoes, meat, potatoes).
- In a separate bowl, beat eggs with milk or sour cream until smooth. Pour this liquid over the layered potatoes and meat, making sure it covers all layers.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for about 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
Potato Moussaka (Recipe 2):
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 2.2 pounds potatoes
- 1/3 cup oil
- 3 eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Boil potatoes, peel, and slice into rounds.
- Sauté ground meat with chopped onion, salt, and pepper until cooked.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, sour cream, and milk together.
- Grease a baking dish with oil. Layer half the potatoes, then the meat mixture, then the rest of the potatoes.
- Pour the egg and sour cream mixture over the layers, then drizzle warmed oil on top.
- Bake at moderate heat (around 350°F / 175°C) for 45 minutes until cooked through and golden.
