Crispy on the edges, creamy in the middle, and loaded with melty cheese—this old-school potato dish is comfort food done right. No fancy tricks, just simple ingredients and big flavor.
Ingredients (Serves 4)
1.1 lb potatoes (about 4 medium)
3.5 oz aged sheep’s cheese (or feta), grated or crumbled
2 cups whole milk
2 large eggs
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 Tbsp butter or olive oil, for greasing
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 °F (190 °C). Lightly grease a medium baking dish with butter or olive oil.
Prepare the potatoes:
Peel and thinly slice the potatoes into rounds (about ⅛ inch thick). Season with salt and pepper.
Layer the dish:
Arrange the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, overlapping slightly to create even layers.
Make the custard:
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. Pour the mixture evenly over the potatoes.
Bake:
Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven.
Add the cheese:
Sprinkle the grated sheep’s cheese evenly over the top, then return to the oven and bake for another 10–15 minutes, or until golden and bubbling.
Let rest:
Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Serving Suggestions
