Did you know that savory breadsticks have been around since the 1600s in Italy and later became a popular snack all across Europe? Variations of Cheese and Sesame Breadsticks and seeds are especially popular in Central European cuisine.
Sesame seeds aren’t just for texture. They’re packed with healthy fats, fiber, and calcium—making your crunchy snack a little more nutritious.
If you letting the dough rest overnight it gives that perfect flaky texture. The margarine softens and blends with the cheese, giving the breadsticks a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth bite.
Cheese and Sesame Breadsticks
Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted margarine or butter (about 250 grams)
2 cups grated hard cheese (like sharp cheddar or gouda – approx. 250 grams)
2 cups all-purpose flour (approx. 250 grams)
1/4 cup sesame seeds (about 50 grams)
2 egg yolks
Method:
In the evening, knead a dough from margarine, cheese, and flour. This base is what gives Cheese and Sesame Breadsticks their signature flaky and rich texture.
Wrap and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, roll out the dough on a floured surface.
Cut into thin sticks.
Beat the egg yolks and mix with sesame seeds, then brush the tops of the sticks.
Bake at 200°C (392°F) for about 10 minutes, or until golden and crisp.
Let the Cheese and Sesame Breadsticks cool slightly before serving for the best texture and flavor.
The result? Absolutely delicious! These breadsticks are crunchy on the outside, soft inside, and dangerously easy to devour.
