Cherries are a delicious, juicy filling for pies and tarts, a perfect addition to creamy cakes, and a refreshing topping for hot summer days. But that’s not all—they are incredibly healthy too. Here’s why:

Cherries are rich in vitamins A, C, E, and folic acid, as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, iron, and fiber. They contain powerful compounds such as phenols, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, kaempferol, and quercetin.

Thanks to their strong anti-inflammatory properties, cherries are beneficial for reducing pain caused by gout, muscle inflammation, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Research shows that consuming 20 cherries a day or their equivalent in concentrated juice has a pain-relieving effect comparable to aspirin or ibuprofen.

New studies also highlight cherries’ role in reducing inflammation. In one study, ten people drank 250 ml of cherry juice daily for two weeks, which significantly reduced inflammation, normalized triglycerides, and lowered LDL cholesterol levels—factors that contribute to heart disease.

Cherries are also loaded with antioxidants that protect the nervous system and prevent oxidative stress. This is especially important for older adults, as it helps guard against conditions like memory loss, senile dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Cherry Tart

Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 1/2 cup + 1 tsp melted and cooled butter
  • 1/3 cup + 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 175 g flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp finely ground almonds

For the filling:

  • 170 ml whipped cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 450 g pitted cherries, halved

Preparation:

  1. Grease a round tart pan with butter.
  2. For the crust, mix butter and powdered sugar in a large bowl. Add flour and salt, and knead into a soft dough. Press the dough evenly into the bottom and sides of the pan. Place the tart pan on a baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes at 180°C (356°F), or until the crust slightly puffs up. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with almonds.
  3. For the filling, whisk the whipped cream, eggs, vanilla, and powdered sugar in a large bowl. Add flour and mix well. Arrange the cherry halves evenly over the crust and pour the filling over them.
  4. Return the tart to the oven and bake for 40–50 minutes, until the filling is firm and golden.
