This recipe is great for celebrations or large gatherings because it’s quite filling. Plus, it’s versatile—you can adjust the ingredients to suit your tastes, even making a lighter version with tuna instead of cured meats, using light mayo, plant-based margarine, and cheese alternatives. It’s a crowd-pleaser no matter how you make it!
Ingredients:
- 3 baguettes
- About 7 oz (200 g) mayonnaise
- 1 stick (about 1/2 cup / 115 g) margarine
- Pickles (about 3-4)
- 2 to 3 hard-boiled eggs
- About 10.5 oz (300 g) cured meats (preferably dry-cured and smoked)
- 7 oz (200 g) cheese (such as Gouda or a similar cheese)
- A little mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
- Slice the baguettes lengthwise as if making a sandwich and hollow out the center. Set the hollowed-out part aside and chop it into small pieces.
- In a large bowl, combine the chopped baguette crumbs with mayonnaise, softened margarine, chopped pickles, chopped hard-boiled eggs, diced cured meats, and grated cheese. Add mustard, salt, and pepper to taste.
- Fill the baguettes with the mixture, then close them up and wrap them tightly in foil. Place them in the freezer a day before serving so they can firm up and be easier to slice.
- A few hours before serving, remove the baguette from the freezer. Once it softens slightly, slice it into 1-2 cm (½-1 inch) pieces, or however you prefer.
