This perfectly simple mushroom sauce makes a delightful addition to any meal. Although its simplicity may suggest it belongs only to everyday dining, it can also shine as a specialty dish during festive occasions.
Mushroom Sauce Ingredients for 4 Servings:
1 onion
2 tablespoons cornstarch
A pinch of salt
200 ml sweet cream
425 ml jar of chopped mushrooms
1 tablespoon mixed pepper
2 tablespoons sunflower oil
2 cloves
Preparation
Peel and chop the onion.
Slice the mushrooms.
You can use either fresh or jarred mushrooms for this sauce. The price difference is negligible, and using jarred mushrooms makes the preparation easier. However, keep in mind that jarred mushrooms tend to be slightly sour.
Pour oil into a pot to cover the bottom.
Sauté the onion until it browns.
Add the sliced mushrooms.
Pour in the sweet cream.
Add pepper and a couple of cloves.
Optionally, add salt to taste. Cook the sauce for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Tip: Mushrooms will quickly release water (and there’s the liquid from the sweet cream), so be cautious during this process. If the onion starts to burn, you may need to add a bit of water and stir the sauce well.
If the sauce is not thick enough, add the cornstarch. Cornstarch can sometimes cause lumps in the sauce, but these can be broken up by stirring vigorously.
Serve the sauce with fried chicken. Enjoy your meal!
