Delicious and creamy potato moussaka made with ground meat, thinly sliced potatoes, and a golden egg topping. Perfect for a comforting family meal.
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
- 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- ½ cup milk (or cream for a richer texture)
Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until soft. Stir in the ground meat, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika, and cook until the meat is browned and fragrant.
Grease a baking dish and layer half of the potato slices, then half of the cooked meat mixture. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and meat. Pour warm water over the layers just until the top layer is barely covered, and drizzle a little olive oil on top. Cover the dish with foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes.
While the moussaka is baking, whisk together the eggs, flour, and milk until smooth. Remove the foil from the dish, pour the egg mixture over the top, and return it to the oven. Bake uncovered for 10–15 minutes, until golden and set. Let it cool slightly, cut into squares, and serve warm. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley or a sprinkle of grated cheese.
