Meatballs in tomato sauce are a dish everyone knows. Whether served with mashed potatoes, pasta, or fresh bread, it’s a timeless favorite that brings warmth and nostalgia to the table.
Ingredients:
- 1 ⅓ lbs (600 g) ground mixed meat (beef and pork)
- 1 slice of bread, soaked in milk
- 1 bunch of fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 2 medium onions
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp flour
- 4 tbsp oil
- 2 cups (16 fl oz) tomato sauce
- A pinch of sugar
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt, pepper, and seasoning to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onion:
- Peel and finely chop the onions.
- Crush them in a mortar and pestle for the best texture. Alternatively, sauté them in a little oil until soft.
- Prepare the Meat Mixture:
- Soak the bread in milk until soft, then squeeze out excess liquid.
- Combine ground meat, onions, soaked bread, egg, chopped parsley, salt, pepper, and seasoning.
- Mix well and let the mixture rest for at least 20 minutes in the fridge.
- Shape and Fry the Meatballs:
- With damp hands, form the mixture into meatballs.
- Roll them lightly in flour.
- Heat oil in a pan and fry the meatballs until golden brown on all sides.
- Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
- In a pan, heat 2 tbsp oil and stir in 2 tbsp flour until lightly golden.
- Add paprika, then slowly pour in the tomato sauce while stirring.
- Season with salt and a pinch of sugar.
- Stir until the sauce thickens.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Add the fried meatballs to the sauce and let them simmer gently for 1–2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Serve warm with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
