Indulge in Marta’s Hungarian Layer Cake with crisp layers and creamy chocolate filling. Perfect for celebrations or a special homemade treat.
Ingredients (Serves 8–10):
Cake Layers:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups cake flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup full-fat Greek yogurt or sour cream
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chocolate Filling:
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, mix flours, sugar, butter, yogurt, baking powder, and vanilla until a smooth dough forms. Divide into 6 portions.
- Roll each portion thinly on parchment paper. Bake each layer on an inverted baking sheet for 8–10 minutes until slightly golden. Let layers cool completely.
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and cornstarch. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat, then stir in butter and vanilla until smooth.
- Spread chocolate filling evenly between each cooled cake layer. Stack layers carefully.
- Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes:
- For extra flavor, you can brush each cake layer with a thin syrup made from 1/4 cup water and 2 tablespoons sugar.
- Optional garnish: shaved chocolate or crushed nuts on top.
