Indulge in Marta’s Hungarian Layer Cake with crisp layers and creamy chocolate filling. Perfect for celebrations or a special homemade treat.

Ingredients (Serves 8–10):

Cake Layers:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup full-fat Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Chocolate Filling:

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, mix flours, sugar, butter, yogurt, baking powder, and vanilla until a smooth dough forms. Divide into 6 portions.
  2. Roll each portion thinly on parchment paper. Bake each layer on an inverted baking sheet for 8–10 minutes until slightly golden. Let layers cool completely.
  3. In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and cornstarch. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat, then stir in butter and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Spread chocolate filling evenly between each cooled cake layer. Stack layers carefully.
  5. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes:

  • For extra flavor, you can brush each cake layer with a thin syrup made from 1/4 cup water and 2 tablespoons sugar.
  • Optional garnish: shaved chocolate or crushed nuts on top.
