There’s nothing quite like homemade plum dumplings to bring a taste of tradition to the table. This easy recipe comes together with just a handful of simple ingredients, creating soft, tender dumplings wrapped around sweet, juicy plums. Finished with golden toasted breadcrumbs, a sprinkle of sugar, and a touch of cinnamon, these dumplings make a comforting dessert or a delicious sweet meal that everyone will love.
Ingredients
- 1 package (4.2 oz) instant mashed potato flakes
- 1 ⅔ cups cold water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large egg
- 1 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
- About 30 small fresh plums, pitted
For the Coating
- 2 cups plain breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Granulated sugar, for serving
- Ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, add the instant mashed potato flakes, cold water, vegetable oil, egg, and flour in that order.
- Mix everything by hand until a medium-firm dough forms.
- Shape the dough into a long loaf, slightly smaller than a French baguette.
- Slice the dough into equal pieces. Flatten each piece, place a pitted plum in the center, and carefully seal the dough around the fruit to form a smooth dumpling.
- Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil.
- Carefully place the dumplings into the boiling water. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Once they float, cook for another 1 to 2 minutes to ensure they are fully cooked.
- While the dumplings are cooking, heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the breadcrumbs and toast them, stirring frequently, until they are lightly golden.
- Remove the cooked dumplings with a slotted spoon and immediately roll them in the toasted breadcrumbs.
- Serve warm, generously sprinkled with granulated sugar and, if desired, a little ground cinnamon.
Yield: Approximately 30 plum dumplings.
