Bechamel sauce is a classic white sauce used in many dishes like lasagna and casseroles. It’s made by cooking butter and flour together and then slowly adding milk or broth while stirring.
Ingredients:
- 1/8 cup butter
- 1 heaping tablespoon flour
- 1 1/2 cups hot broth or milk
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for a few minutes until the mixture turns golden (this is called a roux).
- Gradually pour in the hot broth or milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
- Lower the heat and cook gently, stirring until the sauce thickens.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Continue cooking and reduce the sauce to about 1 cup. This should take approximately 30 minutes.
