Here are three easy ways to make caramel at home, ideal for all your Christmas and holiday baking adventures.

1. Classic Caramel Sauce
Ingredients:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2½ tbsp water
  • ½ cup heavy cream

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Allow the mixture to boil for about 5 minutes.
  4. Continue cooking for 5–10 minutes, occasionally brushing down crystallized sugar from the sides of the pan (do not stir the mixture).
  5. When it reaches a golden-brown color, slowly whisk in the heavy cream until smooth and fully incorporated.

2. Quick Caramel Glaze
Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions:

  1. Place sugar in a deep saucepan and heat until it melts and turns a deep amber color.
  2. Warm the cream to room temperature (or slightly heat it) and slowly pour it into the caramelized sugar along with butter.
  3. Stir gently until fully combined.
  4. If the sugar hardens too quickly, reheat gently over low heat until smooth.

3. Dulce de Leche
Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a deep saucepan (5-liter capacity recommended).
  2. Heat over medium, stirring constantly until it begins to simmer.
  3. Reduce the heat and continue cooking for 1–2 hours, stirring occasionally, until thickened and caramel-colored.
  4. If using later, simply reheat in the microwave before serving.
