Cozy Winter Drinks to Warm Your Soul
When the nights are long and frosty, nothing lifts the mood like a warm, spiced drink. For generations, people have gathered around steaming mugs of wine, punch, and grog—sharing warmth, comfort, and a little holiday cheer.
Mulled Wine: A Timeless Winter Treat
The idea of warming wine goes back to ancient Rome. During Saturnalia, friends and family came together to eat, drink, and celebrate the season. Today, mulled wine keeps that tradition alive. Aromatic spices and sweet fruits make it a perfect companion for cold nights, whether enjoyed at home or at festive markets.
Punch: A Flavorful Journey
Punch traveled to Europe with British sailors in the 1600s. Its name comes from the Hindi word panch, meaning “five,” referring to the first five ingredients: arak, sugar, lemon juice, water, and tea. Over time, Europeans adapted it, using red wine or brandy, adding rum or orange juice, and introducing warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. Heat gently to keep the flavors fragrant.
Grog: The Sailor’s Comfort Drink
Grog was invented for English sailors who had daily rum rations. In 1740, Vice Admiral Edward Vernon mixed the rum with hot water to prevent overindulgence. Sugar and citrus were later added, creating a drink that’s both warming and slightly sweet. Its name comes from the Admiral’s nickname, “Old Grog,” inspired by the cloak he often wore.
