Jeanne’s Chocolate Pie is a rich and indulgent dessert made with a smooth filling of melted chocolate, butter, eggs, and warm spices like cinnamon and allspice. It’s baked in a pastry crust until the top becomes crusty, while the filling stays soft and custard-like inside.

  1. Over low heat, melt:
    • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
    • 3 squares unsweetened baking chocolate
  2. Meanwhile, beat:
    • 4 eggs until light and fluffy
  3. Add to the eggs:
    • 3 tablespoons white corn syrup
    • 1 1/2 cups sugar
    • 1 teaspoon instant coffee
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  4. Add the slightly cooled chocolate mixture. Mix thoroughly and pour into a 9-inch unbaked pastry-lined pan (see bottom).
  5. Bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes or until the top is crusty and the filling is set but still soft inside. Do not overbake! The pie should shake like custard, so it won’t be too stiff when cooled.
  6. Serve with a thin slice of vanilla ice cream on top. Very rich… serves 6 to 8.

About the pie pan:
An 8-inch pie pan works better, but the pie will take longer to cool—about 50 minutes.
