How to Preserve Jam in Glass Jars?
Select and Prepare Jars. Use clean, intact glass jars and lids. Wash thoroughly and rinse well. Place jars upside down on a baking sheet and sterilize them in a 200°F–212°F (90°C–100°C) oven for about 15–20 minutes. Boil lids and bands separately until clean and let air-dry.
Fill While Hot
Once your jam is cooked and still hot, ladle it into the warm, sterilized jars, leaving at least ¼ inch (½cm) of headspace at the top
Remove Air Bubbles & Wipe Rims
Gently tap the jars to release trapped air bubbles. Clean around the jar rims with a damp, sterile cloth to ensure a proper seal.
Seal the Jars
Place the lids and screw on the bands finger-tight. For a strong seal, invert the jars briefly—just a minute or two—and then return them upright. This helps push out leftover air
Cool & Store
Let the jars cool at room temperature until the lids “pop” and seal with a vacuum. Store sealed jars in a cool, dark place like a pantry. If any jar fails to seal, refrigerate and use promptly.
Why It Works
Oven sterilization removes microbes and heats the glass to prevent cracks when filled with hot jam.
Headspace and inverted sealing help air escape and form a vacuum as the jam cools.
Wiping rims and using clean equipment ensures airtight seals, reducing the risk of spoilage.
By following these steps—sterilize jars, fill while hot with headspace, remove air, seal properly, and store cool—you’ll preserve your homemade jam safely and enjoy its fresh taste for months to come.
