On Valentine’s Day, dessert should feel like a gesture, not just a recipe. This cake delivers a quiet surprise: when sliced, soft vanilla hearts appear inside rich chocolate crumb, like little notes of affection hidden in every piece. It’s the kind of bake that turns a simple table into a celebration — warm, nostalgic, and made to be shared with someone you love.
Ingredients
Vanilla Cake (for the hearts)
- 5 eggs
- 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1¾ cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup + 2 tbsp butter or margarine, softened
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Cake
- 5 eggs
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup + 2 tbsp butter or margarine, softened
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Glaze
- ⅓ cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- 2 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Cream butter and powdered sugar until light. Beat in eggs one at a time and add vanilla. Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt, then gently combine with the batter.
- Spread batter in a lined pan and bake at 350°F until done, about 25–30 minutes. Cool fully and cut out heart shapes.
- For the chocolate batter, repeat the mixing method, adding cocoa to the dry ingredients.
- Grease a loaf pan and spread a thin layer of chocolate batter. Arrange heart cutouts upright in a tight row down the center. Cover with the remaining batter.
- Bake at 350°F for 45–50 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- Melt chocolate with oil and drizzle over the cake.
