There are meals that simply feed you, and then there are meals that wrap around you like a warm blanket on a chilly evening. These cheesy Mediterranean meatballs belong firmly in the second category. They are the kind of dish that turns an ordinary Tuesday into something worth remembering—the aroma of garlic and oregano drifting through the kitchen, tomato sauce bubbling gently in the pan, and a golden blanket of melted mozzarella waiting to be broken with a crusty piece of bread.

Inspired by the sun-drenched coastlines of Southern Italy and Greece, this recipe brings together humble ingredients and transforms them into something that feels straight out of a family-owned trattoria. The secret lies in the details: bread soaked in milk keeps the meatballs impossibly tender, a splash of red wine adds depth to the sauce, and fresh basil brings a peppery brightness that cuts through the richness. Everything comes together in one baking dish, making cleanup almost as easy as the cooking itself.

Whether you are hosting friends for a casual dinner or just craving a little comfort after a long day, this is the recipe that delivers. Pair it with buttery mashed potatoes, twirl it through spaghetti, or keep it simple with a hunk of warm bread to mop up every last drop of sauce. However you serve it, expect empty plates and requests for seconds.

Ingredients:

1.3 lb ground beef
1 egg
1 slice bread
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
1 medium onion, finely diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
Salt & black pepper to taste
1 tsp dried oregano
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 cup red wine
1 can (20 oz) diced tomatoes
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

How to make it:

Soak the bread in milk. Mix with ground beef, egg, half of the garlic, salt, pepper, and basil.

Roll into meatballs and cook in olive oil until golden brown.

In the same pan, sauté the onion and remaining garlic. Add red wine and let it reduce slightly. Stir in tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Place the meatballs in a baking dish, pour the sauce over them, and top with mozzarella cheese.

Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve with mashed potatoes, pasta, or crusty bread. ❤️
