Sugar Cookies


1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-1/4 cups sifted all-purpose fl our
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
6 to 8 ounces red or green colored sugar
In large bowl, mix butter, oil, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, egg
and vanilla. In separate bowl, sift fl our, baking soda, baking powder and
cream of tartar; gradually stir into butter mixture. Chill overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Remove 1/4 of dough from refrigerator;
roll into 3/4-inch balls. Roll in colored sugar. Place on ungreased cookie
sheets; fl atten balls with bottom of a glass (dough must be cold or it will
stick to the bottom of the glass). Bake at 350 degrees for 7 to 9 minutes
or until lightly browned around the edges. Cool on wire cooling racks.
Makes about 9 dozen
